Aging in Place

Aging In Place Initiative

In recent years, the demographics of the older adult population in Scarsdale, as well as nationally, have changed. Today’s older adults, or as they are sometimes referred, “The New Old” are unique from preceding generations in that they are more active, will live longer and have obtained higher levels of education (National Association of Area Agencies on Aging).

Research demonstrates that many older adults prefer to “age in place” within their communities and do NOT want to move to obtain the supportive services required to address their changing physical, mental and social needs.  o achieve this vision, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging recommends that local governments, businesses, nonprofits and the faith based community work collaboratively to address the issues of aging. Studies have shown that “aging in place” is less expensive and provides for better physical and emotional outcomes for older adults than being in an institutional setting.

The Aging in Place Initiative is a joint endeavor of Scarsdale Village and SFCS which addresses the evolving challenges of our older residents who wish to remain in their homes and within the community. The program provides an array of services including outreach, emotional support, in-home assessment, referral services, advocacy, education, friendly visiting and future planning assistance.

Although The Aging in Place Initiative receives funding from Scarsdale Village and the Westchester County Board of Legislators, it remains under-funded.  Your donations make a real difference and allow SFCS to continue to care for Scarsdale's most cherished residents.
