Keeping the Door Open

It starts with an open door

Scarsdale § Edgemont Family Counseling Service is a nationally recognized family service agency. SFCS is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children. We are a non-profit member agency of Alliance for Families and Children and the United Way of Westchester-Putnam.  Our professional staff are licensed in New York State as providers of mental health services. SFCS is governed by a board of directors representing the Scarsdale § Edgemont community.

Family is the SFCS way of thinking about human problems. From this perspective, we look at people not just as individuals, but as integral parts of a complex, multi-generational system.  At Scarsdale § Edgemont Family Counseling Service, we believe that change is possible. Sometimes all it takes is a new way of looking at an old problem. SFCS works with children, teens, adults, but always from the perspective of family.

SFCS is a vital community resource.  Our innovative programs serve every age group.  Our dedicated professional staff is available both days and evenings to assist any member of our community who needs help or support during a difficult life experience.  SFCS also works cooperatively with community agencies and volunteer groups to strengthen our community and to meet new challenges as they arise.

Our open door means that no one is ever turned away.  Client fees, grants and fundraising by our Board of Directors form the basis  of our income. These funds are not enough to cover costs. Scarsdale § Edgemont Family Counseling Service relies upon the generosity of individual contributors to make up the difference.

Every community is deeply affected by the complexity of contemporary life.  Changing family structures, substance abuse, dual career parents, AIDS, aging and economic pressures challenge all of us.  SFCS is a center for family growth and learning, a place where families, couples, and individuals can find help and understanding at any stage in the life-cycle.

In 1920, Scarsdale § Edgemont Family Counseling Service was founded by the Scarsdale Woman’s Club. In 1944, the agency became an incorporated, independently governed organization.  Since that time SFCS’ mission has been to strengthen and support family life and to contribute to the well being of our community.  The agency does this through a variety of programs and services created for all segments of the population.  These include psychotherapy, older adult services, youth outreach, social skills groups for children, mental health services and family life education.
